Alliances divide Greece’s New Left Party

A call for honesty and clarity has emerged within the New Left party, as leader Alexis Haritsis opened the two-day session of the Central Committee urging members to face difficult decisions—especially on the issue of political alliances.

The final vote once again revealed deep internal divisions within the party.

Two main camps have formed around differing strategic visions:

The first faction, led by Alexis Haritsis, advocates for an open, programmatic dialogue with all progressive forces, without exclusions. In their submitted proposal, they emphasized:
“The New Left can and must work toward building a progressive front and a joint electoral list with all forces identifying with the Left, social democracy, and political ecology.”

This position is supported by many prominent figures, including MPs Efi Achtsioglou, Nassos Iliopoulos, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, Meropi Tzoufi, Özgür Ferhat, and Theano Fotiou, as well as senior members such as Nikos Bistis and Kostas Karpozilos. Notably, MPs Sia Anagnostopoulou and Hüseyin Zeybek are also aligned with this camp.

Meanwhile, the so-called “presidential faction”, aware of its minority status within the party organs, called for the disagreement to be resolved through a membership referendum.

The final decision on the New Left’s strategic direction and potential alliances is expected to be made at the Permanent Congress scheduled for January.
