New Left leader Haritsis visits Western Thrace as farmer protests shift in İskeçe
Alexis Haritsis visits farmer roadblocks in Western Thrace – farmers leave Egnatia Highway blockade in İskeçe and move to the customs area.
Farmer protests in Western Thrace are ongoing, with the roadblock at the western entrance of the Egnatia Highway in Gümülcine (Komotini) remaining in place around the clock. In İskeçe (Xanthi), however, the blockade has been lifted: some farmers withdrew completely, while others relocated to the Industrial Zone near the İskeçe Customs Office, which they are intermittently closing for several hours at a time.
New Left party president Alexis Haritsis visited both protest sites yesterday, accompanied by MPs Özgür Ferhat (Rodopi) and Hüseyin Zeybek (İskeçe).
Haritsis listened to the concerns of farmers and livestock breeders, accusing the government of inaction and of lacking a plan for compensations and herd recovery, as well as a national strategy for the primary sector—issues he said contribute to the ongoing depopulation of rural areas.
Meanwhile, consultations continue among farmer groups nationwide to maintain a unified stance and to select representatives for upcoming talks with the government, as referenced by both the prime minister and the minister of Rural Development and Food.
