Zeybek condemns police violence: “This arbitrariness cannot be tolerated”
Hüseyin Zeybek, MP for İskeçe with the New Left Party, issued a strong statement following allegations that a member of the Turkish minority was assaulted by a police officer and abandoned in an open field. He described the incident as “unprecedented arbitrariness in our country.”
According to Zeybek, the off-duty officer handcuffed the citizen, took him into custody without authorization, and then left him in a nearby field—claiming he had mistaken him for a migrant.
“No one deserves inhumane treatment, not even migrants”
Zeybek sharply criticized the justification:
“Even if the victim had been a migrant, who gives this officer the right to engage in inhumane treatment, to use violence, and to target citizens? This mentality is unacceptable.”
“A product of discrimination and impunity”
He stressed that the case is not an isolated incident but rather rooted in years of discriminatory rhetoric and a culture of impunity:
“This mindset is the direct result of discrimination deliberately fueled by the government and the protection of perpetrators from accountability. But let it be known—this trend will be opposed not only by the minority but by all democratic forces in society.”
“Racist rhetoric endangers the country”
Directing criticism at the ruling New Democracy Party (NDP), Zeybek accused the government of fostering extremist narratives:
“Far-right rhetoric, legislative initiatives reflecting this mindset, and the daily racist poison spread by NDP’s top officials are dragging the country into dangerous territory.”
Zeybek called for an immediate investigation into the incident and demanded that those responsible be held accountable, urging the government to assume responsibility.
