Three West Nile Virus cases confirmed in Alexandroupoli: Public health warnings issued

This announcement followed a phone conversation between Mayor Yiannis Zamboukis and the Head of the Disease Department of the National Public Health Organization (EODY), as well as communication with the Public Health and Social Welfare Directorate of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region.

Public Health Warnings

In response, the municipality issued warnings to residents about the virus, emphasizing the transmission methods and necessary precautions for prevention and control. Key information from the announcement includes:

West Nile Virus is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected "common" mosquitoes. These mosquitoes acquire the virus from infected birds (particularly wild bird species). However, infected humans cannot pass the virus back to mosquitoes. Most people infected with the virus do not get sick or experience only mild symptoms. However, a small percentage (<1%) may develop serious illnesses affecting the nervous system, such as encephalitis or meningitis. Individuals over 50, those with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic health conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness.

Recommended Prevention and Control Measures

The announcement stressed the importance of epidemiological surveillance, timely implementation of integrated mosquito management programs, and personal protective measures to prevent and control the disease. The recommended personal protection measures include:

Use approved insect repellents on the body and in the environment, following the instructions for use.
Utilize mosquito nets, screens, bed canopies, air conditioning/fans, and appropriate (long) clothing.
Avoid leaving stagnant water anywhere, as this reduces mosquito breeding grounds on private property.
Elderly individuals, those with weakened immune systems, and people with chronic health conditions should be especially diligent in following these precautions due to their higher risk of severe illness.
Residents in areas where regular mosquito spraying occurs should avoid being at home during spraying and should protect animals, household items (e.g., clothes, toys), food, drinks, and animal feed from exposure during these operations
