Storm Erminio batters Gümülcine area with flooding and damage
Severe weather brought by Storm Erminio caused significant disruption in northeastern Greece, as heavy rainfall overnight led to flooding and damage in areas around Komotini (Gümülcine).
Rainfall levels exceeded 100 millimeters in several locations, with 111 mm recorded in the mountainous village of Yanıkköy (Nymfaia) and 100 mm in Küçükköy (Kosmio)—equivalent to more than 100 tons of water per acre.
The intense downpour caused local streams to overflow, carrying mud and debris into villages including Ircanhisar (Gratini), Sidirades, and Baraklı (Stylarion).
The most serious damage was reported along the Kalfa (Kalchantos)–Bulduklu (Roditis) provincial road, northeast of the city, where a 15–20 meter section of the roadway collapsed due to strong water flow. Cracks and subsidence made the road impassable, with chunks of asphalt breaking away. Municipal crews have been deployed to assess the damage and work on restoring access.
Strong winds compounded the situation, uprooting semi-underground recycling bins in Küçkköy (Kosmio) as rain-soaked ground weakened their foundations.
Despite widespread water accumulation in several areas, authorities reported no major flooding incidents or additional serious damage.
