Sheep and goat pox outbreak worsens in Rodopi
The region of Rodopi is experiencing a sharp rise in sheep and goat pox cases, with six to seven new infections reported each week in recent months.
Since the first outbreak was detected in September 2024, the total number of cases has exceeded 150, while more than 37,000 animals have been culled to contain the spread, authorities said.
Across the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Rodopi remains among the hardest-hit areas, though İskeçe (Xanthi) continues to hold the unfortunate lead with 200 outbreaks and 56,000 animals slaughtered.
In Meriç (Evros), authorities have recorded 160 outbreaks and 23,000 culled animals, while Kavala has seen 45 outbreaks and 13,000 animals destroyed.
The Drama regional unit has also recently reported its first cases, with 220 animals already culled.
In total, since the initial outbreak in Meriç (Evros) in August 2024, the region has reported 556 outbreaks and the culling of approximately 130,000 animals, according to official data.
Speaking to ERT Komotini, Nikos Foteinias, Head of the Veterinary Services of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, said he has submitted a proposal to the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food for the preventive culling of herds located near infected farms or in areas where infection has already been detected.
“These herds are certain to become infected,” Foteinias warned, emphasizing that the measure is aimed at preventing further transmission and breaking the chain of infection.
He acknowledged that the decision would be a painful but necessary step, adding that the action is supported and funded by the European Union.
