More than 2,500 livestock farms across Greece have been affected by an ongoing outbreak of sheep and goat pox, with nearly 477,000 animals culled since August 2024, authorities said.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the National Scientific Committee for Disease Management and Control, 476,839 animals have been slaughtered to contain the spread of the disease. A total of 2,595 farms have been impacted, with 2,094 confirmed cases recorded nationwide.

Between Feb. 1 and Feb. 8, ten new cases were confirmed in seven regional areas, officials said, noting that data is continuously updated as regional reports are finalised.

The ministry urged strict compliance with biosecurity measures, calling on livestock producers to follow veterinary guidance and established health protocols to curb further transmission.
