A 60-year-old Gümülcine (Komotini) resident was arrested on Wednesday evening at the Bahçeköy (Kipi) border station in Meriç (Evros) while attempting to illegally enter the country with vaccines for sheep and goat pox.

According to the Rural Development and Food Ministry, police discovered the vaccines during a customs inspection of the man’s vehicle. Officers found a Styrofoam box containing 12 vials of 50ml liquid solvent and 12 vials of 100ml powder vaccine.

Ministry sources told AMNA news agency that the ministry “is in close collaboration with the Citizen Protection Ministry to implement measures against pox and to identify cases of illegal vaccine importation.”

The man reportedly claimed he received the package from the bus station in Kesan, Turkiye, after it was sent by an unknown sender from Istanbul.

He was arrested, and a case was filed against him by Bahçeköy (Kipi) customs.
