Evros to host training for 2026 military intake
Greece’s Ministry of National Defence will use existing military facilities in the Evros (Meriç) region to train recruits of the fourth 2026 intake, following a request by Evros (Meriç) MP and Deputy Minister of Digital Governance Christos Dermentzopoulos.
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias approved the request following recommendations from the competent military staff, according to an official announcement.
The initiative comes in response to an increase in the number of conscripts expected to join the fourth intake of 2026. The facilities will be used exclusively for the training period of that intake.
Authorities have not disclosed which military installations will be used or how many recruits will receive training in Evros (Meriç).
Armed forces to undergo further structural changes
The decision comes as Greece advances the third and final phase of its new military force structure under the “Agenda 2030” reform programme.
The changes, presented by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, aim to create a more flexible and operationally effective armed forces capable of responding to modern security threats while reducing operating costs.
The planned measures include closing additional military camps, merging units and formations, assessing the operational integration of new technologies and redirecting savings towards improved remuneration for military personnel.
The broader reform also prioritises the integration of new technologies across the armed forces, including the establishment of unmanned aerial systems commands in major military formations.
Military personnel to be reinforced along the borders
A key objective of the restructuring is to reduce the number of military camps operating nationwide and redistribute personnel to frontline and border regions.
In July 2025, Dendias said the number of active military camps would need to fall from 837 to 655 under the second phase of the reforms.
The planned closures and mergers are expected to free up personnel for combat units, with the Defence Ministry estimating that staffing levels in frontline units could reach 70% during peacetime.
The use of existing facilities in Evros (Meriç) for the fourth 2026 intake forms part of the immediate training arrangements, while the wider restructuring seeks to modernise Greece’s military organisation and strengthen operational readiness.
