A growing rockfall hazard along the Narlıköy–Yassıköy road in the Rhodope regional unit has prompted an urgent intervention request from local lawmaker Özgür Ferhat.
Rockfall risk sparks urgent safety call in Rhodope

Ferhat, a Member of Parliament with the New Left party representing Rodopi, submitted a formal parliamentary question to Greece’s Ministries of Infrastructure and Transport and Interior, warning that a serious accident could occur if immediate action is not taken.

Increased Landslide Risk Near Old Bridge

According to Ferhat, the danger is particularly concentrated near an old bridge along the route, where large rock fragments have reportedly detached from adjacent cliffs, posing a direct threat to drivers and passengers.

“Large stones breaking off from the roadside cliffs create a serious risk for motorists. Recent heavy rainfall has further increased the danger,” Ferhat stated.

Heavily Used Alternative Route

The road, in regular use since 2017, has seen rising traffic volumes as it serves as an alternative corridor for local residents. Despite repeated public warnings in past years, long-term protective measures have yet to be implemented.

Geological and geomorphological conditions in the area — including unstable terrain and nearby stream beds — are believed to negatively affect ground stability and heighten the likelihood of rockfalls.

Questions Submitted to Government Ministries

In his parliamentary inquiry, Ferhat asked the competent authorities:

  1. Are the relevant agencies fully aware of the scale of the risk?
  2. Will an urgent technical inspection be carried out?
  3. Are protective measures such as rockfall nets or barriers being planned?
  4. Will funding be secured for immediate intervention?
  5. What is the projected timeline for implementation?

Ferhat concluded by stressing that public safety must take precedence.

“Protecting the lives of our citizens comes first. Necessary measures must be taken immediately before a tragedy occurs,” he said.

Local authorities have not yet issued a formal response, but residents continue to express concern over the condition of the roadway.
