Record number of Turkish tourists visited Alexandroupoli in 2024

In 2024, Alexandroupoli experienced a record-breaking influx of tourists from Turkey. Once a destination primarily visited during holidays and weekends, the city is now favored by Turkish visitors year-round.
Year-Round Tourism Boom
Turkish tourists praised Alexandroupoli for its affordability, delicious cuisine, and leisure opportunities. Restaurants, cafes, hotels, and Airbnb accommodations were highly sought after. Visitors frequently shopped at local markets for olive oil, cleaning products, beverages, and regional delicacies, showing particular interest in local cheeses and sweets.
Tourism Barometer Highlights Turkish Contribution
A “Tourism Barometer” report published by Alexandroupoli Municipality revealed that Turkish tourists make up the largest visitor group in the city, with a majority coming from high-income backgrounds. However, challenges such as outdated facilities at the Kipi Border Gate negatively impacted the travel experience.
Rising Occupancy Rates and Emerging Issues
Deputy Mayor Petros Kiriakidis reported that hotel occupancy reached 100% on weekends, with overall rates climbing to 90-92% in 2024. Despite the economic boost, the surge in visitors has strained the city’s infrastructure, leading to parking shortages, traffic congestion, and complaints about large vehicles in residential areas.
While some locals expressed concerns about these issues, the majority acknowledged the significant economic benefits brought by the tourism boom.
