The long-standing building problems of Turkish Minority schools in Western Thrace have been met with persistent indifference from authorities, drawing sharp criticism.
Western Thrace - December 17, 2024
Ozan Ahmetoğlu, Chair of the Administrative Committee of the Xanthi Minority Middle and High School, has publicly criticized Deputy Minister of Education Zetta Makri for her statements regarding the problems faced by Turkish Minority schools.
In his posts on Facebook and Twitter, Ahmetoğlu expressed his discontent:
“The indifferent, neglectful, dismissive, and ignorant attitude of the authorities towards the issues of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority regrettably continues! I cannot hide my disappointment, frustration, and outrage over Deputy Education Minister Zetta Makri's claims in parliament that ‘the school is adequate and safe’ and that there is ‘no need for a new school building,’ in response to MP Hüseyin Zeybek’s question regarding the building issues of the Xanthi Minority Middle and High School. Such a stance towards a serious issue that has persisted for years is utterly unacceptable!”

While the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace continues to demand solutions for its educational problems, the indifferent response of the authorities has fueled widespread anger. Ahmetoğlu’s statements have resonated across the Minority community.
Deputy Minister Makri’s controversial remarks in parliament have dashed hopes for addressing the inadequate infrastructure and building problems of Minority schools. MP Zeybek’s inquiry, Makri’s contentious response, and Ahmetoğlu’s pointed criticism have reignited longstanding calls for action.
The Turkish Minority community insists on a more responsive approach from state authorities regarding their educational concerns.
