Old courthouse in Komotini secures renovation approval after years of bureaucratic deadlock

A long-standing bureaucratic hurdle surrounding the old Courthouse of Komotini has finally been resolved, paving the way for its long-overdue renovation. The historic building is now officially included in the Ministry of Justice’s national three-year renovation program.

According to Dimitris Ereliadis, President of the Bar Association of Rhodope, the ownership status of the plot housing both the old and new courthouse buildings had remained unclear for decades, preventing any structural improvements or investment. However, after a concerted effort to clarify land registry records, the property now has a complete cadastral registration, with clear boundaries and verified titles for all related buildings.

In a radio interview with "Radio Paratiritis," Ereliadis explained that upon learning of the finalized land documentation, he personally informed Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis. The Minister responded immediately, ordering that the courthouse be added to the national renovation agenda. The Bar Association of Rhodope has since submitted the necessary formal request to the Ministry.

Although the building no longer hosts the core functions of the Court of Appeal, it remains in use and, as Ereliadis emphasized, can fully resume its judicial role once renovated.

The case had been stalled for years due to bureaucratic complications, including fragmented property files, outdated contracts, military land grants, and other administrative gaps. Its resolution marks a significant institutional victory for the city.

Ereliadis called for continued political and institutional support from the municipality, regional authorities, local MPs, and other public bodies to ensure the renovation proceeds smoothly. “This is not just a construction project—it’s a matter of historical and judicial dignity for Komotini,” he stated.
