The Elected Mufti of Xanthi (İskeçe) Ahmet Mete issued a statement on the occasion of the Social Solidarity and National Resistance Day of the Muslim Turkish Minority of Western Thrace.
The statement published on the website of the Mufti of Xanthi is as follows:
"SOCIAL SOLIDARITY AND ETHNIC RESISTANCE DAY"
January 29, 1988 is the day when the Western Thrace Muslim Turks, who always fulfill their civic duty in the best way and are extremely respectful and obedient to their homeland and state, could not stand the various injustices and oppression policies that they had been subjected to for years and said "STOP" unanimously and shouted loudly to the whole world that they would defend their rights arising from international treaties by claiming the existence of their “TURKISH” identity, which the Greek authorities denied, and that he would not accept even the slightest concession. January 29, the turning point of the ethnic resistance, went down in history as a result of the blows inflicted on the freedom of belief of the Western Thrace Muslim Turks, when our Turkish identity was denied for many years, the office of the Mufti was under occupation. The Muslim Turkish Minority of Western Thrace will continue to commemorate such a historic day as the milestone of its honorable struggle against all kinds of restrictions and human rights violations.
Today, we have to say with regret that the state in which we live as a minority still does not give up its stance despite all these outcries and continues to present the same policies to us even today. In this century we live in, unfortunately, being Turkish in this country, opening associations with the Turkish name, worshiping as we wish in our mosques, having a mufti chosen and trusted by the people, and providing our children with a modern education are unfortunately still a problem. The 240 imams law, laws regarding muftis, the punishments given to our muftis, and the negative views seen in our minority schools despite all the reactions and even the marches are the biggest proof of this.
As the Western Thrace Muslim Turkish Community, our duty is to protect our unity and harmony with a sense of responsibility. Let's never forget that we are a Muslim Turkish community. It is our language, history, religion, customs, and traditions that make us such a community. If we hold fast to these values that keep us alive, we will continue to exist as Muslim Turks in Western Thrace. May Allah always keep our unity and solidarity, happy 29 January "Ethnic Resistance Day", which we celebrate its 34th anniversary this year!
