Hundreds of drivers fined €30,000 – Who needs to be cautious?

In Greece, drivers who have digitally withdrawn their vehicles from traffic but continue to use them are facing hefty fines. As of April 10, 2025, drivers can reclaim their vehicle plates through the myCAR platform by paying the "monthly traffic tax," but this can only be done once a year. After paying the tax for a month and receiving the vehicle plates, drivers cannot re-withdraw their vehicle from traffic until the following year.

Once the paid period ends, the vehicle is automatically returned to its digitally withdrawn status, managed by the Greek Tax Authority (ΑΑΔΕ) through the system.

€10,000 Fine
If a vehicle that has been digitally withdrawn is found parked in a public space or moving during an inspection, the digital withdrawal status is canceled. In this case, the driver faces not only the traffic tax but also a €10,000 administrative fine.

Repeated Violations
In cases of repeated violations, the fine can increase to €30,000, and the driver's license will be revoked.

How to Digitally Withdraw a Vehicle
Citizens can access the myCAR platform by logging in with their Taxisnet credentials on the Greek Digital Government Portal (www.gov.gr). The following steps are then followed:

  1. Select the "Ψηφιακή Ακινησία/Κυκλοφορία" (Digital Traffic Withdrawal/Activation) option.
  2. Enter the vehicle's license plate number.
  3. Provide the address information where the vehicle is parked (postal code, street, number).
  4. Declare the ownership status of the parking area (owner, tenant, or designated).
  5. Once the application is approved, the system will notify the vehicle owner. In the case of joint ownership, approval from all owners is required.

This change in legislation was passed on April 9, 2025, as part of the law titled "Strengthening the Capital Market and Other Regulations," presented by the Greek Ministry of Finance.
