Hundreds gather for traditional iftar in Gümülcine, strengthening community bonds
A large community iftar jointly organized by the Gümülcine Turkish Youth Union and the Mufti Office of Gümülcine brought together hundreds of members of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace on March 18.
Held in the garden of the association and surrounding streets, the event drew strong participation, with attendees sharing the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan in a collective setting.
Prayers and Shared Table
The program began with the evening call to prayer recited by religious official İsmail Ahmet. Following the breaking of the fast, the iftar prayer was led by İbrahim Şerif.
Participants gathered around long communal tables, emphasizing solidarity and togetherness—core values associated with Ramadan.
Emphasis on Unity and Cultural Heritage
In his remarks, Sedat Hasan, President of the Gümülcine Turkish Youth Union, highlighted the spiritual and social significance of Ramadan.
“Ramadan is a unique period marked by mercy, abundance, and forgiveness. It strengthens our unity and allows us to experience the culture of sharing at its best,” Hasan said.
He also underscored the role of young people in preserving cultural traditions, noting that practices such as traditional pre-dawn drumming continue to be kept alive by the youth.
Community Leaders Stress Solidarity
Mustafa Trampa, who also serves as head of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority Advisory Board, emphasized the importance of shared Ramadhan experiences across the region.
“Throughout Ramadan, we have gathered at iftar tables in various areas, sharing and strengthening brotherhood. This unity is the most beautiful reflection of the Ramadan spirit,” he stated.
Recognition of Youth Contribution
Also addressing the gathering, Aykut Ünal praised the role of young people in organizing the event.
“This meaningful gathering is made possible thanks to the dedication of our youth. Their efforts have brought us together here today,” he said.
The program concluded with tea and informal conversations, allowing participants to further engage in a warm and social atmosphere.
Among the attendees were Consul General Ünal and his wife İlayda Ünal, alongside community representatives, minority institution leaders, and a large number of local residents.
