Gümülcine Turkish Youth Union holds General Assembly with strong participation
The annual general assembly of the Gümülcine Turkish Youth Union (GTGB), one of the oldest civil society organizations representing the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, was held on Sunday, May 17, in Gümülcine with broad member participation.
The meeting took place at the association’s headquarters and began with the formation of the assembly board. Deputy Mufti of Komotini Fehim Ahmet was elected chair of the board, while Pervin Hayrullah and Seçkin Yetimoğlu served as secretaries.
During the assembly, GTGB President Sedat Hasan presented the organization’s annual activity report, emphasizing the association’s youth-oriented cultural and social initiatives.
Hasan described the union as one of the key institutions of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, stressing its role in supporting cultural identity, social solidarity, and youth development within the community.
The audit committee report was presented by Büşra Yusuf.
In the discussion and recommendations session, Ibrahim Serif highlighted the symbolic and historical importance of the organization for the Turkish community of Western Thrace.
“GTGB has long served as an educational and cultural center guiding younger generations,” Serif stated, underlining the importance of continued public support to preserve the institution’s legacy.
The current executive board was unanimously approved during the vote of confidence process before elections for the new administrative and audit boards were held.
A total of 237 votes were cast in the election, all of which were deemed valid.
According to the election results, Sedat Hasan received the highest number of votes among executive board candidates with 198 votes, followed by Büşra Yusuf with 136 votes and Sedar Hacıoğlu with 135 votes.
For the audit board, Elif Molla İsmail Mehmet led the vote count with 173 votes.
The newly elected administration is expected to focus on expanding cultural, educational, and social activities aimed at strengthening community engagement among Turkish youth in Western Thrace.
Founded in 1928, the Komotini Turkish Youth Union remains one of the most prominent minority institutions in the region, playing an active role in preserving the cultural identity and social cohesion of the Turkish Muslim minority in Greece.
