Greece offers €10,000 incentive for citizens to relocate to Meriç (Evros) border region
In a bid to reverse population decline and strengthen its northeastern frontier, the Greek government has announced a €10,000 cash incentive for citizens who permanently relocate to the Meriç (Evros) region, which borders Türkiye.
The initiative, unveiled by Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou, focuses on revitalizing three municipalities: Kumçiftliği (Orestiada), Sofullu (Soufli), and Dimetoka (Didymoteicho). These areas, while rich in natural beauty, have experienced significant demographic and economic challenges in recent years.
“We are trying to motivate our citizens to move to our borders, to these municipalities that are surrounded by nature and are beautiful, so they have a state incentive,” Michailidou stated in an interview on SKAI TV.
The financial support is intended exclusively for individuals and families who voluntarily choose to settle in the region. The program does not apply to public sector employees who are transferred there through government assignments. In addition to the €10,000 grant, the state will provide supplementary benefits to assist new residents in establishing homes and livelihoods.
The Meriç (Evros) region is a strategic area for Greece due to its proximity to Türkiye and its significance in border security and national policy. The new incentive forms part of a wider government effort to boost economic activity, improve living conditions, and ensure a stable population presence along Greece’s frontiers.
An online platform for applications is expected to go live within the next week, enabling interested citizens to register for the relocation program.
