- Northern section of the Apalos settlement
These interventions aim to improve drainage capacity and reduce flood risks during periods of heavy rainfall.
Additional €5 Million Projects Across Meriç
Spanakis also confirmed that additional flood protection projects worth €5 million are currently underway in the municipalities of Dedeağaç and Kumçiftliği through other Ministry funding programs.
He noted that all requests submitted by local authorities have been examined and addressed, highlighting close cooperation between the central government, municipalities, and regional authorities.
Climate Crisis Increasing Flood Risks
The deputy minister stressed that climate change will continue to affect Greece in the coming decades, increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as floods.
He added that the government of New Democracy remains committed to strengthening resilience in border regions by investing in infrastructure and disaster prevention.
Located along the Evros (Meriç) River basin, the region has historically faced recurring flood incidents, making flood mitigation infrastructure a critical priority for local communities.
