Torrential rainfall affecting multiple regions of the country has triggered a historic flood disaster in the Evros (Meriç) region, where authorities have remained on the highest alert level for six consecutive days.
Historic flooding devastates Meriç: Over 100,000 decares of farmland submerged

Officials report that this marks the most severe flooding in the area since 2015, with extensive damage to infrastructure and agricultural land. Civil protection teams continue to operate at full capacity as water levels remain critical across several river basins.

Levee Collapse Submerges Farmland
The Municipality of Sofulu (Soufli) announced that a levee breach near the Mandra area led to vast tracts of farmland being submerged. Authorities have prohibited access to the affected zone for safety reasons.

On the same day, the Kornofoila plain was also inundated. Overflowing waters from the Meriç River and the Kızıldeli River surpassed embankments, pushing floodwaters toward the Amorio plain and expanding the disaster zone.

Transportation Restored, Water Use Restricted
Authorities confirmed that traffic has resumed at the southern junction of Dimetoka (Didymoteicho) and at the Dadia junction, easing some transportation disruptions in the region.

However, in Dimetoka, residents have been advised not to use tap water for drinking or food preparation purposes until laboratory testing is completed and the network is deemed safe.

Thousands of Producers Affected
Preliminary estimates indicate that more than 100,000 decares (approximately 10,000 hectares) of agricultural land across Evros have been flooded, impacting thousands of farmers and threatening significant crop losses.

Civil protection units remain on high alert, monitoring river levels and reinforcing vulnerable embankments as authorities assess the full scale of the damage.

The Evros region, which forms a key agricultural and strategic corridor along the Greek-Turkish border, now faces a prolonged recovery process amid concerns over further rainfall in the coming days.
