Main levee collapse on Meriç River puts villages at risk in Meriç
Authorities have declared an emergency situation in the Evros (Meriç) region of northeastern Greece after the main levee of the Meriç River collapsed near the village of Karapınar (Kornofolia), significantly escalating flood risks for surrounding settlements.
The breach, which occurred near Derbent Karapınar village, follows days of intense rainfall combined with melting snowwaters flowing downstream from Bulgaria. Officials warn that if additional levees fail, nearby villages and residential areas could face severe flooding.
Over 100,000 Decares of Farmland Submerged
Within the past 24 hours, more than 100,000 decares (approximately 10,000 hectares) of agricultural land across the Evros region have been completely inundated.
Floodwaters have caused extensive damage to farmland, rural roads, bridges, and infrastructure projects. In several areas, crops have been entirely destroyed, leaving farmers facing significant economic losses.
Rising Water Levels in Major Tributaries
Authorities report that water levels continue to rise in the Meriç River, primarily due to sustained rainfall and snowmelt from Bulgaria.
The river’s key tributaries — the Kırmızı Nehir (Erythropotamos) and the Arda River — have also exceeded safe limits, increasing pressure on flood defenses throughout the basin.
Impact of Previous Wildfires
Officials noted that major wildfires in recent years have weakened forest ecosystems and natural water retention systems in the region. The degradation of soil structure and vegetation has accelerated surface runoff, contributing to the intensity and speed of the current flooding compared to previous years.

The Evros regional administration and local municipalities have urged residents and motorists to stay away from levees and riverbanks. Authorities emphasized that negligence or unauthorized access to flood defense zones could result in life-threatening consequences.
Emergency response and rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas, and water drainage operations are ongoing as officials monitor the stability of remaining levees.
