The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has extended the ban on the slaughter of goats and sheep in several regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace until July 15, due to the continued outbreak of sheep pox in the Xanthi regional unit.

The ban affects slaughterhouses in Komotini and Sappes (Rodopi), as well as in Feres and Orestiada (Evros).

According to Nikos Foteinias, Head of Veterinary Services for the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, local farmers are expressing strong concerns about the scope of the restriction. He noted that livestock units in eastern Rodopi, which have not been impacted by the disease, could potentially be exempted from the ban.

“There is a valid question regarding the targeting of the ban,” said Mr. Foteinias in an interview with ERT Komotini. “Farmers whose animals are not affected are understandably protesting.”

Farmers argue that the blanket ban harms unaffected regions and are requesting a more targeted approach to disease control.

The Ministry has not yet announced any compensation measures for producers affected by the extended suspension.
