Greece extends livestock movement ban in sheep pox zones until June
Ministry of Rural Development and Food has issued new clarifications on movement restrictions for sheep and goats in areas affected by sheep pox.
The General Directorate of Veterinary Services said protection zones (up to 5 km from infected farms), surveillance zones (5–20 km), and extended restricted zones (20–40 km) are defined by the European Commission and are mandatory for implementation.
Under European Commission Implementing Decision 2026/458 of February 24, 2026, restrictions in protection and surveillance zones will remain in force until April 30, provided no new cases emerge. Extended restricted zones will remain in place until June 30. If no further outbreaks are recorded, protection and surveillance zones will automatically convert into extended restricted zones through June 30.
Strict Nationwide Measures
Authorities reiterated that:
- All movements of sheep and goats are banned within protection, surveillance and extended restricted zones.
- Animals may only be transported for slaughter with special authorization and testing.
- Movement of livestock outside the extended restricted zones is prohibited for any reason.
- Grazing is strictly banned in all restricted areas.
- Restocking of farms within extended restricted zones is forbidden.
- Transit of live sheep and goats through restricted zones is not allowed.
- Participation of livestock in fairs, markets, festivals or exhibitions anywhere in Greece is prohibited.
The ministry said the measures aim to contain the spread of the disease and will be adjusted depending on the epidemiological situation.
