The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food (ΥπΑΑΤ) has issued a circular outlining strict guidelines for the movement of sheep and goats during the Christmas period, as part of ongoing efforts to control the spread of sheep pox.

The circular was released following a recommendation by the National Scientific Committee for the Management and Control of Sheep Pox, and aims to ensure the orderly transportation of lambs and kids for slaughter during the festive period without worsening the epidemiological situation.

Key Provisions

Movement Permits Required
Transport of animals for slaughter is only allowed with prior authorization from the competent veterinary authority. Each shipment must be accompanied by a health certificate/travel document.

Import Restrictions
The import of live sheep and goats from Romania and Bulgaria is prohibited. Imports from other EU member states must be accompanied by specific commercial and veterinary documents.

Rules for Restricted Zones
In designated restricted zones, movements are permitted solely for immediate slaughter at the nearest possible abattoir and only after a negative PCR test result on saliva samples.

Each movement must involve animals from a single holding only, and the transporter must maintain records of the route taken.

Strict Biosecurity Measures

Transport vehicles must be cleaned and disinfected using approved disinfectants, with supporting documentation required.

Drivers must carry proof of disinfection and use disposable clothing and footwear upon entering farms.

After unloading at the slaughterhouse, vehicles must again be cleaned and disinfected in designated areas.

Movement From Free Areas to Buffer Zones
Movements from free zones into restricted buffer zones are allowed only for immediate slaughter.

No Movement From Surveillance/Protection Zones to Free Areas
Movement of animals from protection and surveillance zones into disease-free regions remains strictly prohibited.

Checks by Law Enforcement
Police, Coast Guard, and other authorities stopping vehicles transporting small ruminants must forward all accompanying documents to the local veterinary service.

Vaccine Import Ban
The import of sheep pox vaccines is illegal, as no vaccine is authorized for use in Greece. Circulation of unauthorized immunological products carries legal penalties.

Consumer Safety
The Ministry emphasizes that meat from sheep and goats circulating on the market is completely safe for consumers.
