Greece maintains strict measures against sheep and goat pox ahead of Easter, no new cases in İskeçe
The Ministry of Rural Development and Food of Greece has announced that no easing of restrictions will take place in efforts to contain the spread of sheep and goat pox ahead of the Easter period, stressing the need for continued vigilance and strict compliance with control measures.
According to updated epidemiological data, a total of 2,147 confirmed cases of sheep and goat pox have been recorded between August 2024 and April 5, 2026, affecting 2,655 livestock farms across the country. Since the beginning of 2026 alone, 125 confirmed cases have been reported, with new outbreaks identified in Preveza, Evrytania, and Ithaca.
Encouragingly, no new cases have been reported in the regional unit of İskeçe, while neighboring Rhodope has remained free of new outbreaks for approximately one month.
“The epizootic situation still requires heightened alertness, close coordination, and strict implementation of measures,” the ministry stated.
Strict Movement Controls and Inspections
In preparation for Easter, special regulations have been enforced regarding the movement and slaughter of livestock. A complete ban on the movement of sheep and goats remains in place within designated protection, surveillance, and restricted zones.
Transport for slaughter is only permitted with prior approval from the competent veterinary authority and must follow strict procedures, including PCR saliva testing.
Authorities have also intensified targeted inspections at key points across the road network, working in close coordination with local veterinary services, the Hellenic Police, and the Hellenic Coast Guard.
Thousands of Inspections and Dozens of Arrests
As part of coordinated enforcement efforts with law enforcement agencies, authorities conducted 52,051 inspections between October 14, 2025, and April 5, 2026. During this period, 94 violations were recorded and 93 arrests were made.
In the most recent two-month period alone (February 1 – April 5, 2026), inspections reached 35,316, resulting in 54 violations and 56 arrests.
The ministry reiterated that strict enforcement will continue throughout the Easter season to prevent further spread of the disease and protect the agricultural sector.
