Government to intensify inspections for sheep and goat pox

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis on Wednesday.
According to AMNA, the meeting brought together officials from the Ministry of Rural Development and Food (RDF), the Ministry of Citizen Protection, the president of the agricultural insurance organization ELGA, and the governor of Central Greece, who represented the Union of Greek Regions (ENPE).
Authorities will implement stricter patrols and enforce zoning restrictions in affected areas. These actions will be carried out daily through coordinated efforts between the RDF Ministry, the Hellenic Police, and local Directorates of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine.
RDF Minister Kostas Tsiaras and Civil Protection Minister Christos Kellas will oversee the daily coordination of operations between their respective ministries and regional authorities.
The government plans to place particular focus on investigating reports of:
Concealed cases of sheep and goat pox
Illegal slaughter and improper disposal of infected animals
Unauthorized transport of livestock, especially at night
These practices significantly contribute to the spread of the disease, officials warned.
The statement emphasized the government's commitment to using all available resources to protect Greek livestock farming and to minimize animal losses. Additionally, the second phase of compensation for animals culled since April will be expedited, as the necessary funding has already been secured.
