Disinfection measures return in Rhodope as livestock disease resurfaces
The initiative, led by the regional administration of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, aims to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease and protect local livestock farming.
Mobile Disinfection Units to Rotate Across the Region
According to Deputy Regional Governor Manolis Tapatzas, the mobile disinfection stations will be deployed along provincial roads and will be relocated at regular intervals to maximize coverage.
The stations are designed to disinfect commercial and private vehicles traveling through affected areas, reducing the risk of disease transmission.
Clear signage marked “Vehicle Disinfection Point” will be installed by contractors to inform drivers and ensure compliance, without disrupting traffic flow.
Mandatory Biosecurity Measures for Farmers and Drivers
Regional authorities stress that the measure is now considered essential to prevent further spread of the outbreak. Farmers and livestock transporters are strongly urged to stop at designated points and allow their vehicles to be disinfected.
The move comes as part of broader containment efforts targeting sheep and goat pox, a viral disease that can cause significant economic losses in the agricultural sector.
Efforts to Protect Livestock Industry
Officials emphasize that cooperation from breeders and the public is critical in limiting the outbreak and safeguarding the region’s livestock economy.
Monitoring and preventive actions are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
