Temperatures in Greece to approach 40°C as sunny weather continues

Greece is expected to experience mostly sunny weather through the weekend, with temperatures gradually rising to 39°C and locally reaching 40°C, while strong northerly winds persist across the Aegean Sea, according to the latest weather forecast.

Temperatures to rise but remain below heatwave levels

Forecasters said temperatures will increase steadily over the coming days, with highs of 35°C to 38°C across much of the country and isolated inland areas briefly reaching 39°C to 40°C.

Despite the increase, conditions are not expected to meet heatwave criteria.

Sunny skies will prevail nationwide, although temporary cloud development is expected over mainland areas during the afternoon, bringing isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous regions.

Strong northerly winds continue

Northerly winds will remain a feature of the forecast, particularly in the Aegean Sea, where they are expected to reach 6 to 7 Beaufort and locally strengthen to 8 Beaufort.

In the Ionian Sea, winds will generally remain lighter, ranging between 2 and 5 Beaufort.

Friday forecast

Friday will be mostly sunny across Greece, with afternoon cloud development over the mainland producing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly in the mountainous areas of Central and Eastern Macedonia.

Temperatures are expected to reach 33°C to 36°C in most regions, rising locally to 37°C or 38°C inland. The Cyclades will remain cooler, with highs of 30°C to 31°C.

Athens and Thessaloniki

In Athens, clear skies are expected throughout the day, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 36°C and locally reaching 37°C. Northerly winds will blow at 3 to 5 Beaufort, strengthening to 6 Beaufort in eastern parts of Attica.

Thessaloniki will also see mainly sunny conditions, with some afternoon cloud development and a chance of isolated showers over nearby mountainous areas. Temperatures will range between 23°C and 34°C, locally reaching 35°C.

Weekend outlook

Saturday will bring a further increase in temperatures, with highs of 35°C to 37°C across most of the country and 38°C to 39°C in parts of the mainland. In isolated locations, temperatures could briefly reach 40°C. Local showers and isolated thunderstorms remain possible in mountainous areas of western, central and northern Greece during the afternoon.
