Four names to represent Turks in Sofulu Municipality Council
In the local elections held in Greece, Turkish minority councillor candidates took part in all three lists competing for Safulu Municipality in Evros province.
On Sunday 8 October, the municipal elections were held for the municipality of Sofulu, in which the current mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos, the List of Cooperation Development Harmony, Stamatios Tsakiris, the List of the Power of Unity, and the List of the Coalition of the People of Sofulu, Hristos Kougioumtzis, competed.
The winner of the elections in the first week was the current mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos and his team.
Turks living in Evros region managed to get four names into the municipal council. The compatriots managed to elect a total of four municipal councilors, two from the ruling party and two from the main opposition.
In both lists, among the candidates from the minority and the majority, the Turkish councillor candidates received the highest number of votes and came first in their lists.
Hüseyin Topal Emin, who was a candidate from Rusenler village from the ruling Co-operation Development Harmony List, of which the current mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos is the chairman, was elected to the council from the first place with 592 votes, leaving behind all the council member candidates. Hüseyin Kuru Ahmet from Büyük Derbent village from the same list received 342 votes and became the second Turkish councillor.
The Turkish councillor candidate from the main opposition Unity Power List, of which Stamatios Chakiris is the chairman, also received the most votes. With a total of 307 votes, Mehmet Çilingir from Büyük Derbent village was the winner of the elections, leaving behind all candidates from the minority and majority communities from the main opposition list. Bilal Berbat, a teacher from Kartunça neighbourhood, who was a candidate from the same list, managed to enter the Sofulu Municipality Council with 295 votes.
