Former Turkish Consul General in Komotini Hasan Kemal Gür passes away

Retired Ambassador Hasan Kemal Gür, who previously served as Türkiye’s Consul General in Komotini, passed away on Wednesday, June 18 in Ankara. His funeral will be held on Friday, June 20.
The funeral prayer for Ambassador Gür will take place at Ahmet Efendi Mosque in Ankara’s Karşıyaka Cemetery at 3:45 PM, after which he will be laid to rest in the Karşıyaka Cemetery.
Ambassador Gür served as Türkiye’s Consul General in Komotini between 1988 and 1990. He was declared persona non grata by Greece in the aftermath of the January 29, 1990 attacks against the Turkish minority in Western Thrace. The move followed his use of the word “kinsmen” (Turkish: soydaş) in an official letter to the governor of Rhodope, in which he requested to visit Turkish shopkeepers whose businesses had been vandalized.
After his post in Komotini, Gür held several diplomatic positions in other countries before retiring in 2013.
In a message posted on its official social media account, the Turkish Consulate General in Komotini expressed deep sorrow at his passing:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our former Consul General (1988–1990) and esteemed member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Retired Ambassador Hasan Kemal Gür. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
As GÜNDEM Newspaper, we offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Retired Ambassador Hasan Kemal Gür. May he rest in peace.
