Emotional “Honor Day” in Western Thrace pays tribute to veteran Turkish Minority Teachers

A deeply emotional “Honor Day” ceremony organized by the Western Thrace Turkish Teachers’ Association highlighted the lifelong dedication of veteran educators who have served the Turkish minority education system in Greece for decades.

The event, held at the association’s headquarters, brought together educators, community leaders, and diplomats in a powerful display of respect and gratitude.

A Gathering Focused on Memory, Identity, and Educational Rights
The ceremony, titled “Honor Day for Graduates of Teacher Training Schools,” was organized by the Western Thrace Turkish Teachers’ Association and honored teachers who have played a key role in preserving minority education traditions in the region.

Among the attendees were:

  • Aykut Ünal
  • Işık Sadık Ahmet
  • Mustafa Trampa
  • Çiğdem Asafoğlu
  • Friendship Equality Peace Party representatives and numerous guests

The event featured speeches, tributes, musical performances, and the presentation of commemorative plaques.

Education Autonomy and Minority Rights Emphasized
In his opening remarks, association president Aydın Ahmet stressed the importance of preserving the educational autonomy of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, arguing that historical guarantees under the Treaty of Lausanne have been gradually eroded over time.

He highlighted concerns regarding:

  • Restrictions on minority school governance
  • Closure of minority schools due to low student numbers
  • Challenges faced by Turkey-educated teachers in employment

Ahmet warned that weakening institutional autonomy in education would represent a major turning point for the community.

Emotional Personal Testimonies Move the Audience
One of the most emotional moments of the evening came from Mustafa Trampa, who shared a personal childhood memory about his early education and the influence of his teachers.

He recalled memorizing the entire 10 stanzas of the Turkish national anthem as a child, crediting his teacher with instilling discipline, identity, and cultural awareness.

Trampa expressed deep gratitude to educators, stating that they had shaped not only academic knowledge but also moral and national consciousness.

Consul General Aykut Ünal: “Teachers Leave a Lasting Mark on Life”
In his speech, Consul General Aykut Ünal emphasized the profound social role of teachers, describing them as mentors, guides, and emotional support figures who shape generations.

He stated that teaching is one of the most demanding professions due to its emotional and psychological responsibilities, noting that a teacher’s impact is often only fully understood years later.

Following his speech, Ünal’s gesture of respect toward the oldest attending teacher, Hasan Müminoğlu, by kissing his hand, drew an emotional response from the audience.

Ceremony Concludes With Music and Awards
The program concluded with:

  • Presentation of honorary plaques to veteran teachers
  • A musical performance by the Yakamoz Group
  • Group photography and a community dinner

Organizers described the event as a powerful expression of gratitude toward educators who have dedicated their lives to the Turkish minority education system in Western Thrace.
