Eastern Macedonia and Thrace: 8 people killed in traffic accidents in July
Greek Police Statement
The General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace provided detailed statistics on traffic accidents and traffic control activities for July 2024 in the regions of Evros, Rhodope, Xanthi, Kavala, Thasos, and Drama. These monthly figures were also compared with the statistics from the same month last year.
Traffic Accidents
In July 2024, a total of 34 traffic accidents occurred in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (compared to 36 in 2023). The breakdown of these accidents is as follows:
7 fatal traffic accidents (6 in 2023)
0 severe injury accidents (4 in 2023)
27 minor injury accidents (26 in 2023)
A total of 52 individuals were affected by these accidents (58 in 2023), which includes:
8 fatalities (6 in 2023)
3 severely injured (5 in 2023)
41 slightly injured (47 in 2023)
Main Causes of Accidents
According to the police traffic monitoring research, the main causes of these accidents were:
Violation of right of way
Driver distraction
Wrong-way driving
Traffic Control Activities
The Traffic Services of the General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace continuously implement road safety and traffic control measures to ensure the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians, aiming to prevent and reduce accidents.
In July 2024, a total of 14,424 violations were recorded during traffic inspections. Among these, 3,359 were classified as dangerous violations. The breakdown of these violations includes:
1,784 speeding violations
529 helmet violations
393 seatbelt violations
247 wrong-way driving violations
149 drunk driving violations
95 mobile phone use while driving violations
66 red light violations
40 improper overtaking
30 worn-out tires
22 improper maneuvering
4 right-of-way violations

Greek Police emphasize the importance of road safety and continuously remind all drivers and road users of the following guidelines to help reduce traffic accidents:
Learn and follow the Road Traffic Rules.
Always focus your attention on driving and vehicle control.
Do not drive under the influence of alcohol.
Do not exceed speed limits.
Always wear your seatbelt.
Seat children in the back seat with a child seat and ensure they are belted.
Wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle.
Do not perform improper overtaking.
Do not run red lights.
Stop at STOP signs and yield the right-of-way.
Do not use a mobile phone while driving.
Give priority to pedestrians.
Follow traffic signs and the instructions of traffic police.
