Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Governor Topsidis meets Kardzhali Governor Nikolov to Strengthen cross-border cooperation

Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Christodoulos Topsidis held talks with Kardzhali Governor Biser Nikolov in Gümülcine, focusing on expanding cross-border cooperation and developing joint regional initiatives between Greece and Bulgaria.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Regional Administration in Gümülcine, where Topsidis welcomed Nikolov and congratulated him on assuming his new duties, wishing him success in office.

According to an official statement, discussions centered on strengthening cooperation between Eastern Macedonia–Thrace and the Kardzhali region, with both sides emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts in cross-border development.

Topsidis proposed that the Komotini Concert Hall could serve as a shared venue for cultural events, festivals, and concerts involving institutions from both countries, aiming to enhance cultural connectivity in the region.

Governor Nikolov, in turn, stated that he intends to initiate procedures to allow organized bus transportation through the Makaza–Nymfaia border crossing for cultural events, subject to necessary official approvals.

The meeting also addressed broader areas of cooperation, including civil protection, wildfire and flood response coordination, and measures to prevent the spread of animal diseases across borders.

During the talks, Topsidis presented informational materials prepared by the Veterinary Directorate of the Region, distributed at border checkpoints and ports. The multilingual leaflets—available in Greek, English, Turkish, and Bulgarian—provide travel guidance and health warnings related to animal disease prevention.

The Bulgarian delegation also shared updates on ongoing public health and livestock protection measures in their country.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both officials agreed to maintain direct and continuous communication on issues affecting citizens and to further enhance regional cooperation aimed at supporting development and improving local welfare.

The meeting ended with a mutual exchange of gifts, symbolizing the continued commitment to cross-border partnership.
