Court hears case of Demircik Villagers over road dispute in İskeçe
A legal case filed by residents of Demircik village over unresolved infrastructure issues linked to a completed road project was heard at the İskeçe Single-Member Court of First Instance on Wednesday.
The lawsuit, signed by 23 villagers, concerns a road stretching from Demircik toward the Bulgarian border. While the road has been physically completed, residents argue that critical issues affecting daily life remain unresolved.
Residents Demand Solutions to Longstanding Problems
Villagers claim that since the beginning of construction, authorities and contractors have failed to address key concerns, forcing them to seek legal action after receiving no satisfactory response through the end of 2025.
The plaintiffs were represented by İskeçe Bar Association lawyer Muzaffer Kabza, while the construction firms Egnatia Odos S.A. and Aktor were represented by attorneys registered with the Thessaloniki Bar.
Witness Testimonies and Evidence Presented
During the hearing, witnesses were examined and evidence was submitted. The presiding judge instructed both parties to provide additional documentation and expert reports by April 7. The case will then be reviewed and decided based on the case file, without a further oral hearing.
Safety Risks and Access Problems
Residents highlighted multiple unresolved issues, including:
- Lack of retaining walls, leaving homes at risk
- Blocked access to barns and livestock areas
- Inability to reach farmland located on both sides of the road
- Damage to water infrastructure and agricultural land during construction
Villagers stated that since 2018, they have repeatedly requested practical solutions such as livestock crossings, access roads, and structural reinforcements for vulnerable homes.
“Turning to Justice as a Last Resort”
Lawyer Muzaffer Kabza said the legal action was taken after years of unfulfilled promises:
“The grievances of Demircik residents are clear. Unfortunately, commitments made so far have not been honored. As a last resort, we had no choice but to turn to justice. We trust the courts and expect a solution. Our aim is not to accuse anyone, but to resolve these problems.”
Political Attention and Government Response
The issue has also drawn political attention. Independent MP Burhan Baran and New Left MP Hüseyin Zeybek previously raised the matter in parliament through formal questions.
The case was monitored in court by Baran, former Mustafçova Mayor Cemil Kabza, and municipal council member Tahir Ömer.
The dispute has also been discussed at the regional level within the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Council, where opposition groups criticized the project and called for corrective measures.
Minister Previously Promised Action
Greek Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas had earlier acknowledged the concerns during the road’s inauguration, stating that authorities were working on solutions and urging citizens to remain patient.
Case Background
An earlier hearing regarding interim measures was held on February 18, 2026, at the İskeçe court but was postponed following a request from the defense.
The outcome of the case is expected to determine whether authorities and contractors will be required to implement long-delayed safety and access improvements for the village.
