Burhan Baran: Demircik–Bulgaria border crossing opened with serious risks

In a statement regarding the opening of the border crossing on Tuesday, January 20, MP Baran said that the long-awaited project was put into service despite major shortcomings. He noted that he was unable to attend the opening ceremony in person due to official duties in Athens, but was represented by members of his team.

Recalling that he had personally visited the area years ago and listened to the problems faced by the residents of Demircik village, Baran stated that he had raised these issues in parliament through formal parliamentary questions. He emphasized that many of the concerns affecting local residents remain unresolved, making the opening of the road in its current condition deeply troubling.

Baran also acknowledged that Demircik residents are continuing their legal struggle over the damages and grievances caused by the road project, adding:

“On every issue raised, I will continue to stand by the villagers and support their legitimate demands to the best of my ability.”

Narrow and Dangerous Access Roads
According to Baran, as of today the road from Demircik toward Bulgaria has been opened as a three-lane route (two lanes in one direction, one in the other) and the border crossing has become operational. However, he stressed that from the entrance of Demircik village onward, the road falls far below acceptable standards.

He pointed out that in several sections the road narrows to a single lane or even half a lane, is full of potholes, and is extremely narrow and dangerous.

Baran further warned that the road connects to the Elmalı–Şahin route, which significantly increases the risk of accidents. While the DemircikBulgaria section was built to modern standards, the lack of any improvement work on the Elmalı connection creates a serious safety hazard.

Call for Immediate Action
Describing the opening of the road as “hasty and irresponsible”, Baran stated that placing the route into service without completing the necessary connections and implementing adequate safety measures is unacceptable.

He cautioned that continuing to use the road in its current condition could lead to irreversible consequences in the coming days and once again called on authorities to take responsibility and address the legitimate demands of Demircik residents.
