Controversy surrounds Alexandroupolis Hospital’s acceptance of donation from Gold Mining Company

The long-standing opposition to gold mining and metallurgy in the Rhodope and Evros regions of Greece has resurfaced following the Alexandroupolis State Hospital’s decision to accept a donation from a gold mining company.
In a statement released on January 7, the Interregional Committee Against Gold Mining in Rhodope and Evros criticized the hospital's acceptance of the donation, highlighting the historical struggle against gold mining. The committee reminded the public that resistance began in the late 20th century and quickly grew into a massive social movement, supported by citizens, scientific and cultural organizations, trade unions, political parties, chambers of commerce, municipalities, and regional authorities. The fight is rooted in concerns over the severe environmental, economic, and public health consequences of gold mining.
The statement noted that Canadian-based Eldorado Gold has recently offered donations to regional state hospitals, sparking debate. While the Komotini State Hospital unanimously rejected the donation, the Alexandroupolis State Hospital accepted it, drawing widespread criticism.
The committee praised Komotini State Hospital’s firm stance and urged Alexandroupolis State Hospital to return the donation.
“We believe the Alexandroupolis State Hospital’s board must immediately return the gold company’s propagandistic donation in line with ethical principles. Furthermore, we encourage the hospital’s labor unions to publicly express their position on this matter,” the statement concluded.
The controversy has reignited public debate on the environmental and ethical implications of gold mining activities in the region.
