Australian Ambassador to Greece pays courtesy visit to the Mayor of Komotini
A fruitful and meaningful dialogue took place between the Mayor of Komotini, Ioannis Garanis, and the Australian Ambassador to Greece, Alison Duncan, during her courtesy visit to the mayor’s office on Tuesday, June 3rd.
The two discussed regional development matters, including strengthening relations with neighboring countries, particularly in tourism, economic growth, and bilateral cooperation programs. A special emphasis was placed on the historical ties between Australia and the village of Thrylorio, which owes its name to George Devine Treloar, an Australian-born High Commissioner of the United Nations. Treloar was responsible for refugee relief efforts in the region and played a key role in the establishment of the village.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Garanis presented Ambassador Duncan with a commemorative gift of the Thracian Horseman, a special edition stamp collection titled “100 Years of Komotini’s Freedom”, and a book highlighting local history and gastronomy.
Ambassador Duncan expressed her admiration for Komotini’s beauty and cultural richness and shared her intention to encourage other ambassadors to visit and experience the region firsthand.
