28 October "OHİ DAY" celebration from Xanthi Turkish Union
Xanthi Turkish Union, one of the well-established institutions of Western "Thrace Turks, published a message on the occasion of the 28 October "NO" National Day of Greece.
A message was published on the social media account of Xanthi Turkish Union by sharing a table with the names of the Western Thrace Turks who were martyred for Greece in the 2nd World War.
In the message published by Xanthi Turkish Union, the following statements were given:
"Celebrating 28 October Ohi (No) Day, we commemorate with mercy the martyrs of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace and all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the homeland during the 1940-1950 wars."
Every year 28 October is celebrated as the "Ohi (No) Day" holiday throughout Greece.
During World War II, the lands of Greece, which were coveted by many states, were being harassed, especially by the Nazi countries.
At that time, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini intimidated Greece and told them to surrender without resistance.
The fact that the country was not very strong both financially and militarily strengthened the "surrender" option on the table.
However, Giannis Metaxas, the dictatorial leader of Greece at that time, officially rejected this offer on 28 October 1940. In other words, he said "No" on behalf of the Greek nation.
According to official sources, the word "No" does not appear in the correspondence, but since then, every 28th of October is celebrated as an official Greek holiday to commemorate saying "No" to foreign invasion.
