Ballistic munition from Iran neutralized by NATO over Turkish airspace
A ballistic munition fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace was intercepted and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense units in the Eastern Mediterranean on Wednesday, according to the Turkish National Defense Ministry.
The ministry said the projectile was detected after crossing Iraqi and Syrian airspace and was successfully engaged by air defenses. Debris that fell in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province belonged to the interceptor used to destroy the threat, officials added, noting that no casualties were reported.
“Our determination and capacity to ensure the security of our country and our citizens are at the highest level,” the ministry said in a statement, stressing that Türkiye remains fully capable of protecting its territory against any threat.
Officials also warned that all necessary measures would be taken to defend Turkish land and airspace, adding that Ankara reserves the right to respond to any hostile act.
Burhanettin Duran also confirmed that Türkiye’s determination to safeguard its territory remains firm. “Every step to defend our land and airspace will be taken without hesitation,” he said.
Ankara raises concerns with Tehran
Following the incident, Hakan Fidan raised the issue with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi during a phone call.
Fidan conveyed Ankara’s concern over the munition launched toward Turkish airspace and urged Iran to avoid any steps that could further escalate the regional conflict, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said.
NATO condemns targeting of Türkiye
NATO condemned what it described as Iran’s targeting of Türkiye and reiterated its support for alliance members.
“We condemn Iran’s targeting of Türkiye. NATO stands firmly with all Allies, including Türkiye, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region,” a NATO spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added that the alliance’s deterrence and defense posture remains strong across all domains, including air and missile defense.
