Young people in Greece stay with their families until 30
According to Eurostat’s 2023 data, the average age at which Greek youth leave home is 30.6, one of the highest in the European Union, ranking third after Croatia (31.8) and Slovakia (31). In comparison, the EU-27 average stands at 26.3 years. The financial burden of housing, which includes not only rent but also fixed costs such as utilities, heating, and taxes, is cited as a key factor behind this trend.
For young Greeks, 31.1% spend over 40% of their income on housing costs, far exceeding the EU-27 average of 10.1%. As the cost of living continues to rise, particularly in terms of rent and energy prices, many young people face delays in achieving financial independence. These economic challenges have long-term implications for Greece's youth and its societal structure.
