Refugee return requests to Greece surge in 2025
According to police data analyzed by Refugee Support Aegean, 9,179 readmission requests were filed in 2025, up from 2,468 the previous year. The majority—7,467—originated from Germany, with most still pending by year’s end.
Greek authorities examined 3,710 requests, covering 5,437 individuals due to family links, and approved 94% of them. Returns also increased, with 725 people sent back to Greece in 2025, compared to 390 in 2024.
The surge suggests a shift in European countries’ willingness to tolerate refugees remaining outside the country where they were granted asylum. Under EU rules, recognized refugees may stay in another member state for up to three months before returning.
Meanwhile, refugees in Greece continue to face significant challenges. By late 2025, nearly 7,900 residence permit renewals were pending, leaving many without valid documents and limiting access to work and essential services.
