Lowest child happiness rate recorded in eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Around eight in 10 children in Greece reported feeling happy during the 2024-2025 school year, according to a study by the Center of Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) on children’s happiness in Greece.

The lowest level of reported happiness was recorded in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, where 68.97% of children said they were happy. The highest rates were found in the North Aegean (84.13%), Crete (84.03%) and Thessaly (82.80%).

Family and school factors play key role

The study found that children’s happiness is linked to several factors, including school performance, family structure, social support and living conditions.

Higher levels of happiness were reported among children living with both parents, those with good school performance, those receiving strong support from classmates and those satisfied with their neighborhood and daily life.

The research also showed that happiness decreases as children progress through school, with the highest rates recorded in primary school (91%), followed by middle school (81.65%) and high school (67.26%).

The study concluded that children’s wellbeing is influenced not only by personal circumstances but also by their wider social and living environment.
