SYRIZA MP Theofilos Xanthopoulos raises question on detention conditions at Drama Correctional Facility

SYRIZA MPs, led by Drama MP Theofilos Xanthopoulos, submitted a formal question to the Minister for Citizen Protection concerning reports and complaints from inmates at the Nikiforos Drama Correctional Facility about detention conditions and the operation of the prison.

According to the prisoners’ statements, a series of issues have been identified, including delays in processing files and applications, inadequate medical care and food, arbitrary decisions by the Disciplinary Council, restrictions on communication with relatives, lack of support for persons with disabilities, and generally poor living conditions.

Particular reference is made to a physical assault incident allegedly occurring on August 22, 2025, during which an inmate was reportedly beaten by members of the prosecutor’s guard without any subsequent medical or administrative follow-up.

“Given that the respect for human rights is a fundamental obligation of the state — and considering that Greece has been repeatedly condemned by the European Court of Human Rights for prison conditions — the MPs ask the Minister whether these allegations have been investigated and, if so, what the results were,” the SYRIZA MPs noted.

They further request clarification on whether the Inspectorate of Detention Facilities has conducted an inspection at the Drama Correctional Facility and whether the Ministry intends to take measures to improve conditions and operations there.

Additionally, the MPs ask whether the alleged assault incident of August 22, 2025, has been officially investigated, and what the findings of that investigation were.
