SYRIZA demands hearing for Greece’s Supreme Court Prosecutor and Intelligence Chief over predator surveillance scandal

SYRIZA has formally requested the appearance of Greece’s Supreme Court prosecutor and the head of the national intelligence service before Parliament’s Committee on Institutions and Transparency, escalating political pressure over the country’s long-running wiretapping and Predator spyware scandal.

In a letter submitted to committee chairman Athanasios Bouras, SYRIZA MPs Dionysis Kalamatianos, Pavlos Polakis and Theofilos Xanthopoulos called for a special parliamentary session involving Supreme Court Prosecutor Konstantinos Tzavellas and National Intelligence Service (EYP) Director Themistoklis Demiris.

The opposition party said both officials should provide lawmakers with explanations regarding “operational matters falling under their responsibilities,” citing Article 43A of the Greek Parliament’s Rules of Procedure.

SYRIZA Targets Handling of Predator Spyware Investigation
The request comes amid renewed criticism from SYRIZA over what the party described as the “scandalous closure” of the investigation into Greece’s surveillance affair, widely linked to the use of the Predator spyware system.

According to SYRIZA, Prosecutor Tzavellas personally authorized surveillance measures involving 11 Predator-related targets and later declined to investigate whether there was a unified operational center connecting the Greek intelligence service and Predator-linked monitoring activities.

The party also questioned why the prosecutor allegedly refused to examine his own potential involvement in the case.

SYRIZA cited previous testimony reportedly given by Tzavellas before the parliamentary committee, in which he allegedly stated that for every surveillance authorization he signed, he maintained direct oversight and personal communication with the responsible intelligence officers handling each case.

The opposition argues that these communications raise further questions regarding coordination between judicial authorities and intelligence officials during the surveillance operations.

Pressure Mounts on Greek Institutions
The Predator surveillance controversy has remained one of the most politically sensitive issues in Greece in recent years, drawing scrutiny from opposition parties, journalists, European institutions, and civil liberties organizations.

The latest parliamentary move signals continued efforts by SYRIZA to keep the issue at the forefront of Greek political debate, particularly regarding transparency, institutional accountability, and oversight of intelligence operations.

No official response had been issued by the Supreme Court prosecutor’s office or the Greek intelligence service at the time of publication.
