Strong earthquake sequence in Northern Evia felt in Athens, damages homes
A series of earthquakes struck northern Evia over the weekend, shaking Athens and parts of central Greece, damaging homes and prompting authorities to close schools in affected areas as a precaution.
The strongest tremor, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, struck near Prokopi shortly after noon on Sunday, minutes after an initial 4.8-magnitude quake. Both earthquakes were shallow, with focal depths of around five kilometers, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.
No injuries have been reported, but local authorities said several homes sustained damage, particularly in Prokopi and Dafnousa. Landslides also affected parts of the local road network.
Aftershocks continue
Seismic activity continued into Monday, with a 4.3-magnitude aftershock recorded at 5:13 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located about nine kilometers southwest of Prokopi at a depth of 16.4 kilometers.
According to seismologists, the tremor was part of the ongoing aftershock sequence following Sunday's main earthquake. More than 110 aftershocks have been recorded in the area since then.
Efthymios Lekkas, head of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, said the seismic sequence was evolving normally and that there was currently no cause for concern.
Authorities monitor situation
In a statement, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection said there were no indications so far that a stronger earthquake than Sunday's 5.2-magnitude event was likely.
The ministry reported that around 70 aftershocks were recorded overnight, including five above magnitude 3.0 and one measuring 4.3, supporting the assessment that Sunday's quake was the main seismic event.
Technical teams and engineers have been deployed to the affected areas, while two inspection committees are assessing damage to buildings. Authorities said the most significant damage has been recorded in older residential properties, mainly in Prokopi and Dafnousa.
Schools closed as precaution
Primary schools across the municipality of Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna, as well as the junior high school in Prokopi, remained closed on Monday as a precautionary measure.
Mayor Giorgos Tsapourniotis said the worst damage was reported in Dafnousa, while additional cracks were identified in buildings in Prokopi that had already been affected by seismic activity in 2025.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as experts assess the evolution of the seismic phenomenon in northern Evia.
