A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck shortly after midnight on Tuesday, rattling Athens and parts of the island of Eğriboz (Evia).

According to the Institute of Geodynamics in Athens, the tremor occurred at 12:27 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located five kilometers in southern Eğriboz, at a shallow depth of 13.6 kilometers.

Although the quake was strongly felt in the capital, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

“The tremor was very intense,” said Stergios Tsirkas, mayor of Marathonas, a town across the South Euboean Gulf. He noted that so far, no damage has been reported. Similarly, the mayor of Karystos in southern Eğriboz confirmed that his office had also received no reports of damage.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
