Storms force state of emergency in three Epirus municipalities

According to state broadcaster ERT, the municipalities of Zagori, Filiates and Ziros were hit hardest, suffering extensive damage to homes, infrastructure and local road networks. Flooding in several areas left residents trapped inside their houses as emergency crews worked to reach them.

The intense rainfall and strong winds also affected northern Corfu, where significant damage has been reported, while villages in northern Tzoumerka remain without electricity. The weather system extended beyond Epirus as well, impacting mountainous regions of Kalabaka in Thessaly, Kozani in Western Macedonia, and Aspropotamos in Trikala.

In Filippiada, Preveza, storms triggered road flooding, landslides and the collapse of electricity pylons, causing major transportation and power outages. In Konitsa, landslides and damage to power infrastructure left much of the Mastorochoria municipal unit without electricity for hours, while water supply networks also faced disruptions.

In response to the scale of the destruction, officials led by Deputy Minister for the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados and Secretary General for Natural Disaster Recovery Petros Kampouris are scheduled to convene in Corfu on Saturday to coordinate next steps and assess the needs of the affected regions.
