More regions face water shortages as drought worsens

More regions across Greece have been placed under drought-related emergency status as the country faces worsening water shortages driven by prolonged dry conditions and surging summer demand, according to local media.

Greek daily To Vima reported that the number of regions under emergency status has risen to 10, including several Aegean islands and Corfu, as authorities warn of a long-term water crisis caused by years of below-average rainfall, declining water reserves and increasing consumption.

The government is preparing emergency measures aimed at speeding up the construction of critical water infrastructure, including water supply networks and desalination plants, in areas officially declared to be facing shortages.

Tourism is placing additional strain on water resources, particularly on Greece's islands during the peak summer season. According to the report, daily water consumption on Mykonos increases by up to nine times during the tourist season, while demand rises by more than 500% on Santorini, 344% on Paros and Karpathos, and 238% on Naxos.
