More heavy rain forecast across Greece after Wednesday floods
Greece faces continued unsettled weather through Thursday and Friday, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds following Wednesday’s flooding, the National Meteorological Service warned.
The Peloponnese is under a “Red Code” flooding alert until Friday, while western Greece, including Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Ithaca, is also at risk of severe storms and flooding.
Wednesday’s downpours already caused landslides, rockfalls, and road collapses in areas such as Preveza and western Peloponnese. Fire crews pumped water from homes and businesses, and municipal teams cleared debris on major routes, including the Patra-Tripoli highway, where a road section near Divri subsided. Power outages were reported in Pyrgos, Ilia.
In the Athens area, heavy rain caused a stream in Pikermi to overflow, disrupting traffic, while roads in Polygono were blocked by debris. Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution on slippery roads.
