Risk Committee warns of unstable weather through Friday
Greece’s Risk Assessment Committee has warned that unstable weather conditions, including rain and thunderstorms, will continue to affect large parts of the country through Friday, as severe weather that began earlier this week persists.
Authorities said conditions have eased in some areas, including the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese islands. However, localized thunderstorms are still expected in the southern Ionian islands, western and southern Peloponnese, the Cyclades and Crete. On Friday, unsettled weather is forecast to continue, with storms affecting the southern Peloponnese, the Cyclades, Crete, the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese.
In Attica, rain and possibly thunderstorms were expected Thursday evening and mainly overnight. According to the National Meteorological Service, rain and scattered thunderstorms are forecast on Friday in the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese and the northern and eastern Aegean islands. Other regions are expected to experience temporary cloudiness, with local showers and isolated storms in southern parts of the Peloponnese.
Visibility will be locally reduced over mainland areas during morning and evening hours due to fog, while winds are expected to blow at force 3 to 5, reaching up to force 6 in the Aegean. Temperatures will rise slightly in northern areas, reaching 12 to 13 degrees Celsius in northern mainland regions, 14 to 16 degrees elsewhere, and 17 to 18 degrees in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.
Earlier, a state of emergency was declared in the municipality of Glyfada, on Athens’ southern coast, following Wednesday’s destructive storm. The flooding claimed the life of a 56-year-old pedestrian who was swept away by floodwaters and trapped beneath a vehicle.
